Urology Medical Licensing: Start Early
I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday.
I am taking this opportunity to write briefly on medical licensing. This is most applicable for those that are in their chief year vs last year of fellowship and have either signed or looking to sign soon. In short, each state has a separate medical board that oversees the licensing of physicians. The most important thing is to start early when it comes to getting your application in for your license. You don't want silly paperwork keeping you from working once you get done with training.
You will need to have completed the USMLE step 3. Also, this needs to have been completed within 7 years from taking Step 1. Otherwise, you will need to start over and take all of the USMLE step exams. I have seen this happen before. You don't want to be a fellow and studying for step 1.
There is not much info for me to add here except to point you to the website of the respective medical board to which you are applying. State Board contact info is listed below. I hope that this is useful.
